There are sessions where, even before you lift the camera, you already know it’s going to be special. That’s exactly how it felt walking up to NaKeia on the lovely streets of downtown Huntsville — because this wasn’t our first time photographing her. We first met her over two years ago, right after we moved to Huntsville, when she reached out for family photos. We still remember that very first session: how warm she was, how easy she made everything feel, how she instantly treated us like friends instead of strangers. Getting to see her each year and build a friendship with her and her sweet family has truly been the sweetest blessing.
And then there was the moment that still makes us smile. We had just finished their family photos at Blevins Gap, with the mountains glowing behind them. We were packing up, about to head out, when she stopped us and said, “Wait — can I take a picture of you two?” That tiny moment said everything about her heart. Thoughtful. Genuine. Kind in a way that feels rare.
So when we woke up one morning and saw her name pop up on our phones — literally the morning after she and Tyler got engaged — we both basically flew out of bed. Julia saw the text, gasped, looked at Sean and yelled, “AHH! NaKeia’s engaged!!!” Cue the smiling-so-big-it-hurts kind of happy dancing in our kitchen. It meant so much that she reached out right away. It’s always such an honor when couples think of us first during one of the most important moments of their lives.
Meeting Tyler for their engagement session made the joy feel even bigger. We saw it the second they walked up to us: the way NaKeia absolutely lights up around him, and the way he watches her with this quiet, steady tenderness. As we wandered through brick-lined streets, zig-zagged through crosswalks, and paused in pockets of golden light between the buildings, we watched him slip his hand into hers, walk closest to the street without thinking twice, and pull her in with this little smile that said everything. He treats her like she’s his greatest treasure — and it shows in every small moment.
Somewhere between the courthouse and the crosswalk by the coffee shop, they started telling us their story. How they met through coaching mutuals — two people who both live and breathe basketball. How Tyler knew she was the one on their very first date: October 13th. And how for NaKeia, it was early last November, when she started noticing the exact attributes she had prayed for in a husband showing up consistently in Tyler… without her ever telling him what those prayers were. We could feel the sweetness of that moment — the kind of story you don’t just hear, you feel.
And then, right in the middle of downtown, with cars humming by and the sun slipping between the buildings, they told us all about the proposal. And oh my goodness — it was so them.
Tyler had told her they were taking their Christmas pictures early so they could get cards sent out. She was a little skeptical, but she knows him — he likes things done the right way. So she went along with it. But when they pulled up to Burritt on the Mountain and saw a “Closed for Private Event” sign, she stopped in her tracks. “Well… we probably can’t take pictures if it’s closed,” she said. What she didn’t know was that he was the private event. He had rented the whole overlook just for her.
A dear friend was waiting there with a camera, acting completely casual. And those “ten minutes” of Christmas photos? They turned into an hour because the view was stunning — and the wind? Absolutely wild. We could picture every second as they told it. Her hair whipping around. Tyler brushing a piece out of her face. Their friend stepping back into position and saying, “Okay, turn toward me!”
And there he was. On one knee. With the entire city of Huntsville sparkling behind him.
As we listened to them tell it, we felt like we were right there — the wind, the overlook, the surprise, the joy overflowing out of her before she could even think. It was perfect.
